Wednesday May 31, 2:31 pm ET

BOSTON, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- A new hurricane season begins, yet tens of thousands of Katrina victims remain without permanent homes. Hundreds of thousands of the nearly one million houses destroyed remain in ruins. Today, this dire need for affordable housing in the Gulf Coast has prompted private citizens to launch a national call to action and fundraising campaign -- Making Change for Katrina (http://makingchangeforkatrina.org). Making Change for Katrina is the nation's first-of-its-kind citizen-driven campaign to collect spare change and transform the idle coins into much-needed housing for families devastated by last season's Gulf Coast hurricanes. Proceeds from Making Change for Katrina go directly to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that builds simple, decent housing in partnership with people in need."

The Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE) and Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) recently announced that three community partnerships will receive small grants and technical support to convene local donors, grantmakers, and nonprofit leaders to discuss issues affecting Black and Latino communities across the country.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 5, 2006 -- The Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE) and Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) recently announced that three community partnerships will receive small grants and technical support to convene local donors, grantmakers, and nonprofit leaders to discuss issues affecting Black and Latino communities across the country. Dialogues in Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2006 and occur throughout 2007. ABFE and HIP expect to announce grant support for additional communities next year.

These convenings are part of the ABFE/HIP Initiative – a recently launched, multi-year project of ABFE and HIP that seeks to raise awareness about the role that philanthropy can play in targeting resources to high-priority issues disproportionately affecting Blacks and Latinos in the United States. Ricardo Millet, ABFE board member and member of the HIP Leadership Council, agrees with the new direction of the initiative. “Strategically, it makes sense to focus our efforts and resources on the local level. This is where the relationship between philanthropy and our communities is strongest.” "
